Star Anise Seed is the seed pod from the fruit of the Illicium verum plant, an evergreen shrub native to Southwest China. The star anise pod, which shapes like a star (hence its name). It has an average of eight points, each containing a single pea-sized seed. Both the seeds and the pod are useful in cooking and contain the sweet, potent anise flavor. Star anise is a pillar ingredient in Chinese cooking; it is one of the main flavors in Chinese five-spice powder. Because of its sweet flavor, star anise is mainly used in jams and puddings.

Star Anise Seed is full of antioxidants. And, similar to turmeric, it also has anti-inflammatory properties. It is also rich in vitamin A and C, which help fight free radicals that are responsible for early aging and diabetes. At the end of a big meal, try sipping star anise tea, to aid in digestion and reduce bloating. Star anise may be able to help reduce oxidative stress, prevent the buildup of harmful free radicals and help enhance heart health. Star anise contains a compound, shikimic acid, which is commonly used in medications to treat influenza, and adding star anise to your routine may help keep your blood sugar in check.

 

In addition to its use in traditional Chinese recipes, star anise is a key ingredient in Vietnamese pho, Indian biryani, chai recipes, and garam masala.

 

To make star anise tea, begin by setting a kettle of water to boil. Place 1 to 2star anise pods per cup of water inside a teapot and let steep for 10-15 minutes. Strain and sweeten with honey. Drink up to 3 times a day, after each meal, to ease your digestion.

 

Store star anise seed in an air-tight container away from moisture, heat, and sunlight. The whole star anise will remain fresh for about one year.
